Oh, October. I feel wistful + poetic like Anne of Green Gables during the month of October.
I really do.
And as much as I love me the good ol' "get back to it" month of September, re-routing routines leaves my brain feeling a little short-circuited. October feels like a great big "Ahhhhh". A giant sigh of relief that comes with moments floating through the new normal and fallen beauty.
HERE is a new normal that I'm hoping to keep up with: a digital vision board. It is by no means a new concept, but it is a new goal for me. One that I will try to commit to in order to sort out millions of ideas, sparks of inspiration, and to-do lists that are peppering my brain these days.
I figure it's a great way to sharpen my digital design brain, learn new things, and rope in some focused perspective for my business and life goals. I know it's good to get this stuff out of my head and into physical form so they magically start to grow.
TREES} I super duper HEART trees. I love to paint them, draw them, photograph them + hug them. I love wood elements in my home. Right now the trees are transitioning, getting ready to go to sleep, baring their naked selves. I love this time in the season of trees. Deciduous trees are shedding, evergreens are bracing, branches and roots are about to get tested by the cold embrace of winter. It is all so poetic. In terms of this vision board, I aim to get more trees created for the #100dayproject. I have a really beautiful idea for a custom print designed for lovers + sweethearts that includes some of my favourite ink tree paintings. And, the birch trees in the background are reminders that I need to start designing December Studio Christmas cards + tag + wrapping paper. Those trees were some of the stars in last year's designs.
SUMI PAINT BRUSHES} I was introduced to these brushes in 2011 and I have fallen in love with them. I prefer the smallest size you can possibly get (size 0 I think) which is what I find where I buy mine in Chinatown, Victoria, BC. Various stores down there carry them. I use them for my brush script lettering work, but also for imagery like my ink trees that you see on the bottom of the vision board. They are great for small detail work in acrylic paintings. I find that with lots of practice these brushes are very easy to control. I LOVE THEM. I added this image because I want to remind myself to paint more things this month. I was mostly illustrating with a pen last month. The only real painting I was doing was on my walls, which is great, but I need to create with paint instead of just improve the look of my home. ;)
MONEY PLANT} The potted succulent illustration is the money plant. I named it that. It is part of my #100dayproject drawings and at first it had no name, but when I started to play with it in Photoshop, I decided it was the money plant. It is here, obviously, because I want to summon more money my way. I am opening myself for money energy to come my way. It's so weird, our relationship to thinking + talking about money. I grew up thinking that money + making art = not possible. I want to rewire my brain around that big fat lie. Because it's not true. Making art + hard work = money. It's a simple formula, I know. I just have to work some powerful mojo magic and get the fearmonger in my brain to sit it's loudmouth down and zip it for once!
SPREAD LOVE + DO NOT GIVE UP ON JOY} New brush lettering work that I am making into new products. Prints, posters, cards, mini-prints, + mini-mini note cards. BUT! The really fun thing about these two word images is that they are about to go out on a wild + cool adventure with some other art which I hope will make waves around the internet waters and maybe float their way around the world. Because my ultimate goal in creating this artsy life + business is to SPREAD LOVE, INSPIRE JOY + MAKE MAGIC SPARKS happen on this difficult + beautiful planet. Cool.
MAKE MAKE} I want to make make more beautiful art that reflects back to me the love I have in my heart and the joy I want to create in the world. I want to keep making, on repeat. And I want to get in a routine that wears a groove of making into my brain.
&&&&&&&} Who doesn't love a good ampersand? I put this image on REPEAT here because my goal is to find the groove of repetition in this new venture. I am looking to see + find the tasks that I repeat in the business & figure out their schedule & routine. I want to keep saying yes & yes & yes & HELL YES! to the stuff that makes me float, and no & no & no to that which does not. I want to make posters that are graphic design based. &&& the list could go on, but the gist is that I want to keep doing good things and find the groove that works for this life of mine.
MESSY PAINT SPLATTERS} OH, I love a good mess. These are a pretty reminder to keep having fun. This solo-preneur stuff can all get very serious and sorta nerve-wracking at times. I want to keep it fun so I don't sink. I get really full of ideas when I get going and it can get suffocating. I stop breathing. When I just create and make messes for the pure joy of creating, everything flows better. Including my breathe. Including my life.
GO WHERE YOU SHINE} More of the same here. This is a variation on a David Gray lyric. I love this notion. I think of it as another way to say LET GO, or DO WHAT YOU LOVE, or BE WHO YOU ARE. Maybe even DRINK MORE WINE FROM A MASON JAR. My kinda lingo. Go where you shine. Keep going there and light your spark.
Well, that's her. The breakdown for the grand vision board. Tell me, what would YOUR board have on it? Leave me a comment and share your joy. MAYBE, just maybe, I will pick a comment and make you your own pretty vision board print! Maybe.;) You'll have to leave a comment to find out.
